Better Desk Posture: How a Footrest Can Help
Having your feet flat on the floor is a useful starting point—but it does not automatically mean you are sitting comfortably or maintaining a supported posture. You can still slide forward, round your back, or lean toward your screen.
Your feet, chair, and desk all need to work together.
Without a Footrest

When a chair is too high, your feet may hang above the floor. You may slide forward to reach the ground, moving your back away from the chair’s support. If lowering your chair would leave the keyboard too high, a footrest can provide stable support beneath your feet.
With a Footrest

A properly positioned footrest can help you keep your feet supported while sitting back against the chair. The illustration shows that support working together with a supported lower back, relaxed shoulders, and a balanced head position.
The footrest is one part of the setup. It does not automatically straighten your spine or keep you in alignment.
What If Your Feet Already Reach the Floor?
Look beyond whether your feet touch the ground. Can you also sit back comfortably, use the backrest, and reach your keyboard without lifting your shoulders or leaning forward?
If those elements already fit, you may not need a footrest. If they do not, review your chair height, seat depth, and desk arrangement. A footrest may be useful when the chair height needed for comfortable computer work leaves your feet inadequately supported.
Find a Supported, Comfortable Position
Aim for both feet fully supported, your lower back resting against the chair, shoulders relaxed, elbows near your sides, and wrists straight. Keep your screen positioned so your head remains balanced over your torso.
Comfortable posture allows movement. Change positions throughout the day and take short breaks to stand, stretch, or walk. Even a well-supported position can become tiring when held for too long.
The goal is to make comfortable sitting easier—not to force your body to hold one position all day.
